After an enforced absence due to several spectacular race-related injuries (Bennetts road gap, anyone?), Paul Caffin is back on the race track... and on the podium! He took some time out from polishing his beloved collection of Commençals to answer our painlessly invasive questionnaire.
Discipline(s)?
I have no self discipline, but I ride/race DH, XC, Road, All Mountain, Aggressive XC, Mega downs, Fixed, Commute, and/or any other bike marketing buzzwords I do without knowing it. But I don't Huck!
Funky nickname? ProCaf.
Currently riding? Commençal Meta4X and Mini DH; def. debating a new ProCafferton edition Commencal Supreme DH. ;-) Oh, a Sintesi and an old mid-80s classic steel Colnago roadie.
Favourite loop? Can't say -- secret! But usually it involves a little climbing, a little coffee, and hopefully a lot of descending.
Training schedule? Currently in a pre-training carbo-loading gut-building phase. But normally I am up for at least a couple of roadies and some dirt each week. Time to step it up, tho', and turn 'pro'!
Pre-race snack? Hans's race dog with bacon! (Mmm... bratwurst...) Usually it's post-race but there has been an occasion or two where it's slipped in beforehand. :-)
Any odd pre-race rituals? Three 'race' poos before leaving home (ed. Thanks for that.) and Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up' as I arrive at the venue.
When I'm training, I like to listen to... Lupe Fiasco, Korn, Prodigy, Kanye West, but usually my stomach! Also Andy giggling or Peety telling me to shut up and just climb up the wall of a hill he's just pointed us up also feature on high rotation.
Most painful crash? Umm... shoulder #3, but it was more the drive home from Mount Gambier and the realisation that I've just broken another fkn shoulder.
Essential bike accessory? Style. I still need to get me some of that. Is it in stock yet? (ed. What do you mean 'yet'?)
Dream riding destination? Les Gets, Whistler, Swiss Alps, Peru...
Most useful riding tip you've ever received? "Don't hit anything in your race run you haven't hit before in practice." You said 'you've received', not 'you've actually listened to'!
Most useless riding tip you've ever received? "Just punch it; it'll be fine!"
Motto: "Suck it up, princess, and deal with it!"
Why do you think Tim is so cool? He truly inspires us all by the sheer quanitity of Facebook quizzes he actually does!
Finally: tubes or tubeless? Tubeless and clipless!
Thanks, Paulie!

Dear Subscriber,
Happy new financial year! Don't you love doing taxes? Wouldn't you rather be riding? Of course, but then you decide to check the BOM site and see this heading towards Adelaide, and all of a sudden taxes look a bit more interesting. If you're lucky enough to work at a bike shop, you can also while away your non-riding time by doing a stocktake of tiny, tiny bicycle parts, and then spend your sleeping hours being tormented by dreams of packets of ball bearings which come alive at night just to switch their labels around. (For the record, number of gear outer caps currently in stock: 1,403.)
Wait -- what was my point? Oh, that's right. We counted all of our stuff, and then boxes arrived on July 1st, and now we have more stuff! Check it out below, or come in and say 'hi', 'cause we like to see ya.

What's new, pussycats? |
Craving some extra visibility during these black winter nights? Let your rear end be seen from almost 360 degrees (must...resist... Lohan joke...) with the new Topeak RedLite UFO. Four yellow and six red super-bright LEDs make you visible from any direction and have a 60 hour run time. You can choose from three displays (constant, blinking, or cruising) plus multiple ways to mount it (e.g. seatpost, seatstay, bag, or rack). UFOs: they're not just for conspiracy theorists and rednecks anymore! Don't let ESI Grips' meek appearance fool you. Once you try them on your bike, you will be a convert. Made from silicone foam, ESIs are extremely comfortable and give you great hand traction regardless of what you're riding through. What's more, they're super-shock-absorbing, aren't sticky, won't harden or fade, and don't need clamps, glue, or hairspray to install (all of which is more than we can say about William Shatner these days). If you're tired of having that fun moment where your grip becomes a throttle during a wet or muddy ride, ESI will be short for, "Every Situation's In(control)." (Yes, I know. Well, you come up with a better one.) As we like to have a little something for everyone, we're expanding our Schwalbe range, starting with some impressive road racing tyres. At a tiny 180 grams, the Ultremo R is the lightest professional racing tyre on the market. You can read about radial construction principles and nano-sized particles and patented puncture protection until the cows come home (the part about their ceramic particle coating is pretty interesting, admittedly), but it's easier to read this: Fast, fast, fast! Light, light, light! The Stelvio HS 376 is also fast, fast, fast, but less light, light, light (235g) although it makes up for that by being more puncture resistant, puncture resistant, puncture resistant. (Gee, I wish I hadn't started doing that.) Regardless, weight weenies and roadies galore, we've got you covered. In German rubber, no less. ("Ah, the usual weekend," you say.) Your toes -- be they froze? Could your feet be on fire for a good twenty seconds before you notice? Then we've got the sock for you! Official spiel: the New Zealand Sock Company's Mountain Bike sock is a lightweight performance sock made with merino wool. Our spiel (because we wear 'em everywhere, on and off the bike): they're warmer than a standard sock but they fit in your bike shoes, plus they're super-comfy. Even better, they're on special! Normally $26.50, we'll give you 15% off one pair, 20% off two pairs, and 25% off three pairs. Even with my crappy maths, I know this is a good deal. According to the manufacturer's website, you'll be so happy with these socks, you'll do this --> (Seriously, you should see the large version. They look insane.) |

So pretty, they get their own box |
We've been waiting for ages for these babies, and they're finally here! The Commencal Supreme frames, literally just out of the box as you read this, are even more radiant than anticipated. (The photos below don't do their beauty justice, trust me.) Instead of the usual green/white colour scheme, we've got the Supreme DH Racing in the white Atherton World Cup colour scheme, while the Supreme Racing (otherwise known as the Supreme Mini DH) is in the blinding Team Green. No doubt the dirt monkeys among you will be even more excited to learn that they're cheaper than we expected: the Supreme DH is $3895 while the Supreme Racing is $3195. Both come with Fox shocks, and both are available in very limited quantities. Run! Bring money! |

Where do you want to go today? |
Sick of your usual MTB loop? Looking for more trails but have no idea where to start? Some kindly bike peeps (e.g. Dave Clark) have just made your life a lot easier by launching the Adelaide MTB Trails website. No more trawling the web in vain for maps; it's all here, as well as suggested loops, meeting places, and links. The site is still in its infancy so get on the forums, spread the word, and go exploring in a different neck of the woods! |
|
This would probably be a good time to let you know that the BMCR staff is now back to a duo. Yes, two bike paths diverged in a yellow wood and Andy took the one less travelled by... or something like that. Farewell, Mr. Blum! (Shine on, you crazy diamond. :-) )
On a different note, stay tuned for some interesting announcements coming up within the next month! No, don't ask us what they are now. They're secret... for now...
Keep riding, and stay safe.
Cheers! Pete & Lia Bio-Mechanics Cycles & Repairs Where 'floor space' is currently a concept, not a reality | |
